Unless you've been living under a rock for the past four years, anyone who knows what a flush is has either played on a social poker app or knows someone who has.
First there was PPPoker. Then there was PokerBros and Pokerrrr2. Now there are many apps to choose from: Xpoker, Upoker, Suprema Poker. What's the difference? How should you decide which app to play on?
ClubGG is one of the newest and fastest-growing social poker apps. It is the only poker app affiliated with a full-service real-money poker site (GGPoker). As a result, many clubs and players have been moving from other apps to ClubGG. This guide will give you a complete explanation of the ClubGG software and how all the poker apps work in general.
Before we get into what exactly is ClubGG, it is important to understand the history of online poker and how the social poker apps came to be in the first place.
Poker has been around since at least the late 1800s. When the internet started becoming widely used in the 1990s, it didn't take long for someone to figure out that people would want to play poker online. Accordingly, the first hand of online poker was dealt in 1998 on a site called Planet Poker.
Several other online poker sites soon followed Planet Poker, the most popular being Paradise Poker, Party Poker, Full Tilt Poker and Pokerstars. In 2003, a regular guy named Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker Main Event after winning his entry via an online poker satellite for less than $100, which ignited a poker boom. There were huge games running daily on all sites, which people watched for entertainment and discussed on online forums. Several players became rich and arguably famous from online poker success. Many young people dreamed of running up a small deposit into a fortune and quitting their jobs.
This golden age of online poker lasted until April 15, 2011. On this day, known as "Black Friday", law enforcement officials seized and shut down all the biggest online poker sites. People could no longer play and many players had large amount of funds lost or locked up for years while authorities worked out how to unravel the poker sites.
Online poker was effectively dead for several years. While a few smaller sites still ran games, they were restricted to certain countries or required cryptocurrency for deposits and withdrawals. The days of having hundreds of tables to chose from and railing nosebleed stakes games were over.
Then in 2016 an app called PPPoker was released. This app offered online poker in a decentralized manner. Players could not deposit or withdraw through the app itself, but anyone could create a club on the app and act as the "house" or the poker room manager. PPPoker's software ran the games and kept track of all the chips for a service fee.
Playing on PPPoker slowly increased in popularity. A few other similar apps were released, most notably PokerBros is 2019. The software improved and players became more willing to trust the apps and the bigger clubs that operated there.
In 2020, the Covid pandemic hit and people were largely locked down in their homes for months, if not years. The poker apps exploded in popularity as a result. Thousands of people set up clubs to play with their friends. Many new apps were released, including ClubGG in early 2021.
This article will discuss the origin of the ClubGG app in detail and some of the features that set it apart from the other apps.
In this chapter, we discuss the nuts and bolts of the ClubGG app. We explain how to get set up, how to find and use all the features of the app and answer some of the most common questions.
If you have never played on the ClubGG app before and need help getting started, please see our detailed articles on how to make an account and how to join a club.
Every online poker app or site has its own unique user interface and features. To help you learn where everything is, we have a separate article explaining how every screen and feature of the ClubGG app works.
In this article, you can find out how to find your player ID number, where to find your chip transaction and hand histories and how to quit a club/delete your account.
One thing that confuses many players when the first use the ClubGG app is figuring out how to exit a table since there is no exit or menu button visible on the primary table screen. To bring up the table menu, which includes the exit button, you must swipe up on the table. See images below for an illustration.
You may notice that you can't see your cards during game play until it is your turn to act preflop. Some clubs chose this option for their tables to discourage collusion, especially for Pot Limit Omaha.
Collusion means players are working together and sharing their hole card information, which would give them a large advantage during play. Not being able to see hole cards until it is a player's turn to act makes it much more difficult to effectively collude.
Many clubs exercise the option on the ClubGG app to set a minimum VPIP percentage requirement for their tables. So what is VPIP?
VPIP essentially measures how many hands a player is playing. It stands for "voluntarily put money in the pot". It is expressed as a percentage of total hands dealt in and is only calculated for action before the flop. Limping (just calling the big blind), calling in the small blind, raising and reraising all count towards VPIP. Calling a bet and then folding to a raise also counts towards VPIP. Checking your option in the big blind does NOT count towards VPIP.
Tables on ClubGG can be set with a minimum VPIP percentage that players must stay above in order to stay at the table. There is a set amount of hands that a player can play when first sitting at the table before the VPIP requirement takes effect. The minimum VPIP for the table written on the table and a hand counter will also be displayed showing how many hands you have played before the VPIP rule kicks in. Your table VPIP is shown next to your avatar. If your VPIP goes under the table minimum at any point after the hand counter reaches the set amount, you will be removed from the particular table and will never be able to sit at that table again.
Unlike some other apps, ClubGG does not take your lifetime VPIP into consideration. Each table VPIP is treated independantly. If your VPIP is too low at a particular table, you will be removed from that table, regardless of your lifetime VPIP. You will still be able to sit at other tables of the same type, but will not be allowed to return to the table from which you were removed for failing the VPIP requirement.
Squid Game tables have special rounds of play known as "Squid Game" on ClubGG. Squid game is a contest in which the last player to win a hand pays a bounty to all the other players.
The exact rules are as follows: Every player dealt in when a squid round begins pays a bounty that is held as a deposit. Players receive a squid button next to their avatar the first time they win a hand during a squid round. The last player left without a squid button loses their bounty and it is split between the other players. The squid game winners also receive their bounty deposit back. There is no additional benefit to winning multiple hands during the squid round. If you leave a table during a squid round without a squid button, you will automatically lose your deposit.
The amount of the squid bounty and number of regular hands between squid rounds will be written on the table. If you join a squid game table during a squid round, you will have to wait until the squid round is over before you are dealt in.
ClubGG offers memberships for purchase by clicking "Get Membership" in the top left hand corner of the main app lobby. The memberships are purchased through your phone's app store (Apple App Store or Google Play). Many of the features unlocked by purchasing a membership card pertain only to the ClubGG app games and do not give any benefit when playing in private clubs. We will go over the private club membership benefits below.
Note, there are no benefits to getting the platinum membership over the standard membership if you only plan to play in private clubs. The unique platinum membership benefits only pertain to the ClubGG app games.
Smart HUD: Smart HUD gives you extra statistics about your opponents when you click on their avatars during game play. It does NOT tell you anything about their hole cards or affect the results of hands.
Rabbit Hunt: Gives you the option of seeing what the turn and/or river card would have been if you fold before they come out. The cards will only be visible to you, not to the other players at the tables.
Splash: Splashes are animations that you can direct at your opponents, similar to throwing emojis on the PokerBros app.
River Card Squeeze: Gives you the option of putting the river card out slowly when you are all-in. It's supposed to increase the excitement.
Okay, so you've downloaded the ClubGG app, set up an account and now you're ready to play. But wait! Where are all the tables? ClubGG does not run tables and take deposits directly. You have to join a club on the app and then play through that club. This section will give some insight about finding clubs and what to consider when choosing one.
There are several ways to find private clubs on ClubGG. The best way is probably to ask people you know and trust at your local card room or home game.
If you are unable to find a ClubGG club through someone you know personally, the next step would be to do some research online. A search for "ClubGG Clubs" on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, or 2+2 should return some options for you to sort through.
Should you end up contacting some clubs you find online, we recommend exercising caution. There is no barrier to entry for starting a ClubGG club and some clubs are certainly more reputable than others.
Look for reviews, posts and comments on social media and poker forums about any club you find and see what people might be saying about them. If you do end up contacting a club manager, see how long it takes for someone to respond to your inquiry and how they interact with you. You should start of with a small deposit and be wary of fist-time deposit bonuses that seem too good to be true.
We have a provided a list of ClubGG Clubs to help you get started. BSB Poker in no way endorses any of these clubs, we simply provide this list as a resource.
There are a few ways ClubGG clubs can distinguish themselves. The most obvious are different player pools and table types. True private clubs will have a totally unique player pool and may offer a unique selection of tables.
However, most larger clubs are in a union and each union will share the same player pool and tables. So what exactly is the difference between playing in two clubs within the same union?
ClubGG clubs within the same union can compete mostly on service and player policies. Some clubs have reliable 24/7 service and others will leave players waiting for hours to get chips. Clubs will also differ widely with regard to bonuses and rewards.
Therefore, when vetting a potential club you are considering playing with, you should should evaluate the response time and professionalism of their admin or manager. Ask some questions and make sure the answers make sense before you consider depositing. Make sure you are actually accepted to a club and see tables running before sending any funds.
Okay, so maybe we're biased, but in this article we present our argument as to why BSB Poker is the best ClubbGG club to play with. In summary, we are one of the longest-running clubs in existence, we have excellent customer service and response-time and we have a great reputation for always paying our players promptly.
If your ClubGG club has more than a few tables running, it is probably a member of a larger organization of clubs known as a union. Here, we tell you everything you need to know about unions and link you to information about specific unions.
A union is a group of two or more clubs that share player pools with each other. This mean that the players from all the clubs in a union can play against each other, both in tournaments and at cash game tables.
Why would any club want to be in a union? Because with a larger player pool, the union can run more games than any individual club could run on their own. This gives every clubs' players more opportunities to play than they would have if the clubs each ran individually.
For example, say Club A has 100 players and can run games three nights a week. And Club B has 150 players and can run games four nights a week. If these two clubs formed a union they would have enough traffic to run games seven nights a week. Then their players could play any night they want instead of only when their individual club decides to run games.
ClubGG currently allows up to 250 clubs per union. So it is important to realize that your agent or club manager may not know all the players at your tables when you are playing.
The individual clubs within a union usually have no or little control over the games offered in that union. Typically a union will employ a table manager. The manager is responsible for deciding which games and tourneys are offered and for maintaining the tables. Clubs can often make suggestions or requests through the table manager but there is no gaurantee they will be approved.
The only way you can tell if you are playing in a ClubGG union is by asking your agent or club manager.
Something to be aware of is that two clubs who are members of the same union will have identical game lobbies. You will see your club's icon and banner but the tables offered will look exactly the same for any club in that union. You may have noticed this if you have ever joined a new club only to find they offered the exact same games as your previous club.
There is no way to play directly in an a Union. You must play through a club that is a member of the Union. If you are already playing in a club, you can ask your agent or club manager which union the club is in.
If you are interested in playing in a particular union, try searching for it by name on Google or social media. You can also check out our list of ClubGG Unions. BSB Poker in no way endorses any of these unions, we simply provide the list as resource. Remember to exercise caution when playing in a new club you find online!
BSB Poker is in Massiv Union, the largest US-based union on ClubGG. Check out our full article on the Massiv Union for more details!
Here we answer common questions about agents on the ClubGG app. If you want more details, please see our full article on ClubGG Agents here.
ClubGG has a structure involving agents and superagents who connect players with clubs for poker games. An agent acts as a bridge between players and clubs, using their networks to bring players in. They work closely with club owners and share responsibilities for players. A superagent is similar to an agent but manages multiple agents and players, coordinating with clubs on a larger scale.
Clubs will have different requirements to become an agent. BSB Poker offers a basic referral program for players who have a friend or two that they can bring in. We require at least three active players before we will consider making someone a full-fledged agent. Please contact us for questions about our referral program or becoming an agent.
Clubs have different policies with regard to agents. Some clubs will require all players to go through an agent in order to play with them. Some clubs, including BSB Poker, will allow players to play directly with the club. Many agents don't have enough players to warrant a full club spot within a union so they join a club. Clubs will work with agents to expand their player pool to reach players that they may not be able to reach with their existing marketing structure.
Here we give a brief overview on playing for real money on the ClubGG app. If you want more details, please see our full article on real-money ClubGG clubs.
ClubGG technically does not allow playing for real money. From their perspective, all games are for fun with play-money chips and players may not exchange chips for cash through the app. However, there is nothing to prevent individuals from setting up a club on the app and selling and redeeming chips for their players for real money. This activity is not supported or monitored by ClubGG!
So if you want to play for real money on ClubGG, you have to find a club. ClubGG will not help you with this. There is no directory of clubs on the app. You must know a club owner or manager and be invited to their club via a club code, which you can use to search and apply for a club. You must also buy and sell all your chips through the club. ClubGG cannot help you with any disputes you may have with a club over money.
Trust is crucial when playing for real-money through a private club on ClubGG. ClubGG is designed for play-money and any real-money activities conducted through the club are at the player's own risk and outside ClubGG's control.
So please exercise good judgement when choosing a club to play with. Don't deposit large amounts until you have built up trust with the club. And withdraw regularly - don't allow large chip balances to build up on the app or leave a balance for months. If you plan to take a break from playing and have a chip balance, cash out!
